GROUND BRIGHT SUBSCRIPTION $22/month

WHAT IS GROUND BRIGHT?

A Ground Bright subscription is an opportunity to support Wild Pigment Project. In exchange, as an offering of thanks, Ground Brighters receive gifts of foraged and gleaned pigments prepared by artist-foragers in the mail on a random schedule, several times a year, as well as free admission to all Pigments As Catalysts talks given through the project. Read more below.

Ground Bright subscribers are the core support for Wild Pigment Project, which receives no other funding or grants. In that sense, Ground Bright subscribers ARE Wild Pigment Project.

Each month, in addition to supporting Wild Pigment Project, 22% of net proceeds from subscriptions goes to either an artist from the PIGMENTS AS CATALYSTS talk series or a land or cultural stewardship organization chosen by a current pigment contributor.

GROUND BRIGHT SUBSCRIBERS RECEIVE:

* foraged or gleaned pigment “surprises” in their mailboxes several times a year, on a random schedule.

* first dibs on purchasing remaindered pigments, plus %22 off

* free admission to all online talks in the PIGMENTS AS CATALYSTS series

* invitation to join an international map of other subscribers and pigment practitioners (coming in 2024)

All Ground Bright pigments are either gleaned from materials discarded (or rehabilitated) by humans, or foraged on the ancestral lands of contributors. Each pigment packet contains about 7 grams of pigments, plus four text cards including a recipe or suggested activity for the pigment. The packets are hand painted and produced. They’re like small artists books in card form.

The 2022 - 2023 Ground Bright year saw an ink made from dissolved firearms and overwintered oak galls, a bright yellow lake pigment made with overabundant buckthorn berries, a turquoise blue pigment crafted from old copper plumbing, an ochre made with crushed bricks from an antique textile mill, redwood wildfire charcoal, reclaimed iron oxide mine waste, and rich silt science samples during a study of Louisiana’s vanishing coastline.

The coming year promises some unusual blacks from the far edges of the planet, a dark blue ink shrouded in secrecy, and…well, we’ll let the rest be a surprise!

Apache Stronghold, Northeast Farmers of Color Land Trust, Lead To Life, Komemma Cultural Protection Association, Right To Roam, the Amah Mutsun Land Trust, Złotoryja Land Enthusiasts Society, the Abenaki Nation of the Missisquoi, and Evergreen Conservancy are among this year’s donation recipients. Since its inception in 2019, Ground Bright has raised more than 37K for organizations like this.
