AMANDA BRAZIER

Artist/pigment forager AMANDA BRAZIER has this to say of her work:

I am a painter living in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I began my journey with earth pigments in 2011, learning from the artist and teacher Sandy Webster at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina. My painting practice has been transformed as I gather local clays and shales and welcome their ancient narrative into my work. In addition to painting, I teach earth pigment classes and serve as a facilitator for the public art non-profit Mark Making. My work explores how the way we build and inhabit shelter affects our relationship with the land and others. The structures and materials of textiles and primitive dwellings influence my visual language. Like the building process, the paintings develop through stacking, weaving, and assembling simple forms. The textures and patterns suggest familiar spaces that not only cover our bodies but also connect our souls. I make paint from earth pigments gathered near my home, constructing a painted sanctuary with a sense of its origin.
