Contributor Sarah Hudson writes: “This envelope contains no pigments. Earth pigments we use as art materials come from the ancestral lands of indigenous people. These are not only people from the past. We exist, today. We face issues about how that land is used, today. This month’s suggested activity is designed to help raise awareness of indigenous land issues by considering the minerals in your collection. The suggested activity can also be used to consider / navigate the future acquisition of earth pigments into your collection.”

A NOTE FROM WILD PIGMENT PROJECT ABOUT ACTION REQUIRED

This month, in place of pigment, artist Sarah Hudson spent an exclusive hour with Ground Bright subscribers to share about her pigment practice, and answer questions about this month’s ‘pigment’  (non-pigment), Action Required. Sending earth pigment away from its land of origin, or sharing earth pigments outside of ones’ culture is problematic or undesirable for many indigenous people. In recognition of this, Wild Pigment Project is pleased to initiate this new presentation format as an occasional alternative to actual pigment. In compensation, presenting artists will receive the funds that would otherwise go towards the mailing and processing costs of shipping out that month’s pigment. They will also, as is the case for all contributors, choose the recipient organization for the month’s 22% donation.
