oak creek iron : april ‘20

Contributor Kelly Moody writes: “This pigment came from when I was camping out near Sedona, Arizona. While camping there this Spring, tiny Biscuitroots (a food Lomatium) were popping up and the seedlings of a regional wild Carrot species. In Sedona, there is a high iron content in the rocks. The lands were inhabited by the Sinagua people for many years, who developed intricate agricultural practices. Later the Tonto Apache and Yavapai co-inhabited the region when the first European settlers arrived.”

Kelly Moody grew up in the piedmont region of rural southern Virginia in tobacco and muscadine country on the traditional lands of the Ochaneechee, Meherrian and Saponi. After a B.A. in Philosophy and five years of organic farming and intensive study with several herbalists and ecologists, Kelly hit the road. For the last six years she has been studying the land, plants and place by being out in the field all across the Western U.S.

She started The Ground Shots Project, a creative ethnobotanical research and storytelling project which features in-depth botanical write-ups and a podcast. She's been writing about her travels on the Of Sedge and Salt blog. Both projects and links to the podcast can be found at www.ofsedgeandsalt.com.

22% donation recipient : Ground Shots Podcast

The recipient of Ground Bright’s 22% for this month will go to support Kelly Moody’s podcast, Ground Shots. The Ground Shots Podcast is an audio project that features conversations and storytelling about our relationship with ecology through the intersections of activism and creativity. How do we do our work in the modern age, when the urgency of ecological and social collapse sometimes feels looming? How do we creatively and whole-heartedly navigate our relationships with one another and the land?

The Ground Shots Podcast explores story, connection, heart and grit : what drives people to love our earth, or creatively express the ideas they need to communicate, tend the wilds or walk long distances? The Ground Shots Podcast explores the ways in which we can find bridges of commonality with the land as our shared interest and concern.
