 JOANNA FOWLES

Joanna Fowles is a researcher and artist working on Dharawal bushland on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia.

Joanna’s works urban forage colour from local natural materials to make place-responsive artworks and installations through mediums of dye, screenprint and painting. She combines minimal expression with natural materials to make colour creating works that invite reflection on our perception of local materials urban foraged from nature and post-consumer food waste resources.

Recent work titled Plant Chroma Codes pushes boundaries of frequently overlooked local materials from plants and café waste streams to reveal spectrums of hidden colour from plants and post-consumer biomaterials. These unique plant chroma codes form artworks and totems created by meticulously hand-painting and then naturally dyeing onto organic canvas to create a distillation of plant material and place.

Joanna is a lecturer in the Fashion & Textile program at the University of Technology, Sydney.
