WORAMA UMPAIRAT

My name is Worama Umpairat. I am an artist based in Bankok, Thailand.

For the past 3 years, I have been learning, collecting natural pigments materials. Here in Thailand, I have seen pigments from high mountains, streams, and sea. The country has a diverse landscape, with lands as old as time. My favorite pigment place is on the Petra islands on the south where the bright red rocks are dated 500 million years old. I also love working with local pigments near home in Bangkok. This space used to be under the sea. Therefore, ‘green clay’ or glauconite is abundant.

Once the pigments are collected, there are processed and kept in powder form. I then use them by combining pigments with mediums of choice, usually gum arabic and plaster. I also use wild clay in my ceramics work.

For me, earth pigments are sacred. It contains life forces that made all of us. Earth pigments is nature in its purest forms, a part of mother nature’s soul, a piece of time, a sense of place, and much more.
